Right, I’ve narrowed down the issue.
The widgets in the default sidebar only appear twice on the page that has been selected as the “front” page in the “Reading” page under “Settings” in the admin menu.
I have tried different pages as the “front” page and in each instance the widget(s) appear twice. but when not selected as the “front” page the same page will only have the widget(s) appear once on that page.
Clearly, the issue is with the “front” page setting.
